Black House (Baan Dam) of Chiang Rai Thailand

Heading outside of Chiang Rai to Baan Dam or the Black House we had no idea what to expect. The entire compound is the creative genius of the Thai artist Thawan Duchanee. The elegance, sophistication, creativity and quirkiness of Thawan Duchanee was immediately mesmerizing and moving.

Chiang Rai Thailand

As we rode through the streets of Chiang Rai, crouched over to peer out the sides of the tuk-tuk, I found my body filling with relief and excitement. The streets of Chiang Rai are cleaner, lined with flowers and ornate gold posts topped with flying birds or dragons. All were a welcomed change to the bustling, not very clean, cities we had explored before.

Elephants of Chiang Mai Thailand

As we approached the elephants for the first time I was taken aback by their incredibly gentle nature. They are quiet, and relaxed animals. They moved around us with curiousity, and caution while we stood in awe. I was surprised at how small their eyes were and how they seemed to be as interested in seeing me as I was them.

Living By My Rules

It is very easy to find amazing hotels in Thailand and not spend more than 100.00 per night including breakfast. It is possible to travel through the country cheaply without jumping on a songtaew or mini-van. We have booked VIP buses for 12.00 per person, flights for 33.00 each and ferrys for about 24.00 per person.
